In July 1889, the family traveled to Burlington, Iowa to visit the mother's two sisters. On July 4th, Emmy's dress was set on fire by a sparkler, and she died of burns. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Potters Field in the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
