Bernice Bruner, 99, of Evansville, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Bethel Manor, her home for the past five years.
The lifelong member of McCutchanville Community Church was preceded in death by her younger sister, Gladys Nuebling, who passed on Dec. 19. Gladys would have been 98 on Jan. 8, 2013; Bernice would have been 100 on April 2, 2013.
Bernice graduated from Central High School and Evansville College, where she majored in Latin and English. She was a teacher for four years at high schools in Gas City and Noblesville, Ind., where she also became the school librarian. That sparked an interest, and she returned to school at the University of Illinois to earn a degree in library science.
She then was hired as coordinator of township libraries in Vanderburgh County, which included use of the bookmobile, and eventually progressed to lead the Children's Departments of Evansville's libraries, touching the lives of thousands of kids in her 36 years of service. She also taught night classes in children's literature at Evansville College. Her career took her to library conferences across the country and the world; she visited all 50 states and much of Europe.
Bernice retired from the library at the state-mandated age of 65 but later operated the Wood Valley Doll Shop with her sister.
Bernice is survived by two nieces, Janis (John) Wayman and Shari (Tim) Ethridge; grand-nephews Kyle, Jake and Cameron Wayman and Aaron Ethridge; and grand-nieces Katherine and Elizabeth Ethridge and Jennifer Wayman.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 at McCutchanville Community Church, 9505 Petersburg Rd., with Rev. Jarmon Perkins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery near her parents, Elmer and Mary Belle Bruner. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., and from noon until service time Thursday at the church.
