George J. Alfano, 87, a 12-year resident of Holiday City at Berkeley, N.J., formerly of Newark, N.J., died peacefully at home on March 18, 2011. The funeral is on Monday assembling at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Verona, N.J., at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. George was a Newark firefighter for 34 years and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was previously active in coaching youth sports. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Ann P. Alfano (nee Kenehan); devoted father of George Alfano, his wife, Maria Luisa; Christopher Alfano, his wife, Eileen; Paul Alfano, his wife, Jane; John Alfano, his wife, Lisa; Monica Barrios, her husband, Mike; Mary Stotwell, her husband, Andrew; Grace Brunner, her husband, Steve; Annie Devlin, her husband, Timothy, and Rita Almeida and her husband, Nelson; loving grandfather of 23 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and dear brother of the late Grace Wainen and Marion Boscaino.
