SON SEES FATHER DIE
Elmer E. Denny Falls in Gearing of Crane Operated By His Son

Elmer E. Denny, aged fifty years, of 1221 Van Buren street was killed this morning when he fell in the gearing of a crane operated by his son.  The accident occurred at 10 o'clock this morning in the yard of the Fort Wayne Rolling mill.  Mr. Denny's death was not instantaneous but his injuries were so severe that death resulted an hour and a quarter later at the Lutheran hospital.
Mr. Denny, Sr., was seated on the shackle or cross of the frame as it traveled down the yard under the control of his son who is the regular operator, and in some manner unknown he lost his balance falling into the meshes of the big power gears immediately below him.  The terrified son discovered his father's plight too late to stop the wheels that were fast grinding away his life.  When the power was shut off the body had been drawn half way into the machinery and it became younger Denny's unpleasant task to resume his position at the electric controller and reverse the machine in order that those who had arrived at the scene to offer assistance could extricate the mangled form of the victim.  When the fleshshorn and bleeding body was taken out the piteous moans of the injured man sent chills through men accustomed and hardened to the sight of badly injured men.
Medical aid was summoned from the city by men in the office before the body was released and it was but a short time before an ambulance arrived with doctors and a wild dash was made to the hospital.  Dr. B. Van Sweringen, in a desperate effort to sustain life, amputated the horribly crushed left arm and left leg that had passed wholly into the deadly gearing.  But the injuries were not confined to those members, the lower part of the body was badly bruised, the skin and flesh was torn from the shoulder and neck, and internal injuries had been caused by the terrible twisting to which his body was subjected as the motion of the wheels drew him into the mechanism.  The son is almost prostrated by the horrible death.
