Dr. John Pierce McIntosh, 99, of Kensington, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 at New Britain General Hospital. He was the widower of Bessie (Burnham) McIntosh who died in 1982.

Born in Hinckley, NY, he was a son of the late Bert C. and Daisy (Pierce) McIntosh. He was a former resident of New Britain and a Kensington resident since 1937. Dr. McIntosh was a veterinarian, having practiced with Dr. Rackcliff in New Britain until 1937, when he opened his own practice and Animal Hospital in Berlin. He retired from his practice in 1981.

'Doc', as he was known to his many friends and clients, was formerly active on a number of boards and committees in the Town of Berlin. He served two terms on the Berlin Town Council, and also served numerous times on the Finance Committee and on the Board of Education. He was a charter member of the New Britain Kiwanis Club and the Constructive Workshop of New Britain. He was a founder, charter member and past president of the Central Connecticut Association for Retarded Citizens. 'Doc' served as the official veterinarian of the Berlin Fair for many years. He was a member of the Kensington Congregational Church and was a US Army Veteran of World War II.

In spite of what was often a hectic schedule, Doc was never too busy to stop and chat a bit with the many people he came in contact with during the course of a day. Whether it was advising a child on the proper care of a pet kitten or listening to a Berlin resident's opinion on some pressing matter of business before the Town Council, Doc was always ready to lend a willing ear and offer a friendly word.

Surviving are a son, Theodore R. McIntosh of Shelburne Falls, MA; a daughter, Judith L. McIntosh of Kensington; two sisters, Ruth Postl of Kensington and Mabel Wood of Titusville, FL; a daughter-in-law, Esther L. McIntosh of Kensington; a grandson, Scott McIntosh of Kensington; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a son, John F. McIntosh, and by two brothers, Donald McIntosh and Bert McIntosh. Doc is buried next to his wife in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill, Connecticut.
