He enlisted as a Private on September 10, 1861 in Christiansburg, VA. by Capt. James Taylor in Company C of the 54th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He soon became very sick on January 1, 1862, but eventually made a full recovery. He worked his way up to the rank of Sergeant and saw quite a bit of action, staying with his unit throughout the duration of the war. After the war, he returned home to Montgomery County, VA and became a farmer.
