Donald F. Edwards, 89, of Springfield, passed away at 6:38 p.m. on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center.

Donald was born April 23, 1923 in Springfield, the son of Benjamin and Irene Edwards. He married Norma Jean Downs on December 30, 1949 in St. Louis, MO.

Donald attended the University of Illinois in Champaign and was a cheerleader there. He then served his country in the United States Marine Corps during WWII, achieving the rank of 2 nd Lieutenant after graduating from Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. During his service in the Marine Corps, he served as Master of Ceremonies for an all-Marine variety show called "Standby for Music" that entertained Marine and Naval personnel in China. He completed his education at Purdue University, lettering in baseball and graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce. He worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation as a reviewing appraiser retiring after thirty years of service. Donald previously served on the Springfield Municipal Opera Board. He was a proud supporter of the Animal Protective League and enjoyed golfing and swimming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Deanna Marciana and one brother, Hal Edwards.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean ,one son, one daughter, two nieces, and one nephew,

Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors.
