Bud Hilliard

COOLIDGE - James Lloyd "Bud" Hilliard, 86, died peacefully at his home of the last few months in Coolidge in the loving presence of his family on Sept. 29, 2012.

A graveside service was held Oct. 6 at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale.

Mr. Hilliard was born on June 26, 1926, in Fayetteville, Ark. In 1942, along with his parents and two sisters, he arrived in Sunnyslope, just outside Phoenix. Being a hard worker, he did many jobs in his teen years, including working at Grady Auten's grocery store, later Thunderbird Air Fields 1 and 2 and then a Reynolds Aluminum plant. In 1952, he went to work for Salt River Project at Roosevelt Dam. In 1957 he started a career with the U.S. Department of the Interior as a power plant control operator at Davis Dam and then moved to Parker Dam, both on the Colorado River. In 1963 he was promoted to power system dispatcher at the Phoenix office of the Western Area Power Administration with the U.S. Department of Entergy, eventually becoming the chief dispatcher and retiring in 1986,

On June 19, 1948 he married Frieda E. Wilson in Wickenburg. Together they had three daughters, now Shirley A. Grossman, Nancy L. Pierce and Peggy M. Hansen. As a family they enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time building their vacation cabin in Prescott. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Desert Rats and the Sunnyslope Historical Society. He was known for his work ethic, sense of humor, loyal nature, willingness to lend a helping hand and love for his family. His greatest joy was spending time at their cabin.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, his three daughters, a sister, 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters and two great-grandchildren.
