Deacon Robert Stein

On January 3, 2013, Deacon Robert Stein unexpectedly but peacefully passed into his eternal Father's arms. He was born on January 29, 1941 in Bandera, Texas and was the son of Robert and Hedwig Stein, also of Bandera. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Bandera and high school at St. John's Seminary in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Assumption Seminary until second Philosophy (four years). In 1969 he received his B. A. Degree from St. Mary's University. His teaching career began at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Bandera, where he taught the third and fourth grades until the school closed in 1968. The next thirty years were spent teaching World History, World Geography, English, Latin I and II, and also working with the gifted-talented program at Bandera High School.

In August of 2000, he began his study for the Deaconate and was ordained a Permanent Deacon on June 11, 2004, at St. Brigid's Catholic Church in San Antonio by Bishop Thomas J. Flanagan. As a lifelong member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bandera, he faithfully served as Deacon to all Masses year-round. His life was spent in the spiritual pursuit of eternal happiness. With true reverence and piety, he recited the Holy Rosary for funerals, was a member of the Parish Council, Knights of Columbus and Historical Comittee, coordinated the Christmas Nativity scene and participated in all functions for the entirety of his life. Even though a retired teacher, Deacon Bobby educated parishioners in an adult catechism class and a Rite of Christian Initation of Adults (RCIA) class for those interested in becoming Catholic.

In 2005 he authored a fact-based historical account of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and its founders from 1855 to 2005, called the 150 Year Commemorative History. His family heritage descended from the original pioneer founders of the Parish. His love for God was evident in every task he encountered as he lived a life of self-sacrifice and deep devotion without complaint. On Tuesday, January 1st, the celebration of the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he unknownly recited his last Homily on the virtues of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. As always, his depth and perception of the spiritual realm gave insight to those who were blessed at hearing his words. He was loved and admired by all who knew him and will be profoundly missed.

Deacon Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Hedwig Stein, brothers, Jimmy Stein, and Louise Stein, and sister, Rita Stein. He is survived by a lovingly devoted sister, Mary Stein with whom he shared a home and business, "Stein's of Bandera". Other survivors include sister-in-laws, Claudia Stein and Linda Stein, nephews, James, Patrick, Matthew, and niece Pricilla.

A rosary will be held at 7 pm Sunday, January 6, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

A funeral will be held at 10 am, Monday, January 7, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Old Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church Building Fund.
