A shadow of sorrow was cast over the whole community on Monday May 18 when it was learned that James Hume had passed away at the home of his son, George at Monterey Park, California. James was the son of the late R.W. Hume and Sarah Ann Scholes, was born in Moundville, Wisconsin on March 27, 1871 and died May 18, 1936. Mr. Hume was married to Miss Alberta Sawyer March 25, 1896. To this union three sons and one daughter were born: Horace of Garfield, Washington; Clarence, who preceded him to the great beyond in 1917; Mrs. R. E. Smith of Potlatch, Idaho, and George of Monterey Park, California. James resided in Moundville until 1906 when he went to North Dakota. There he took great interest in public matters. He was postmaster of Hume for eight years, the township being named Hume in his honor. He established a telephone exchange and operated a store. His place of business was called "The Halfway House" between Scranton and Bellfield, North Dakota, and The Travelers Home. He was County Auditor at Amidon in 1915 and 16. In all of these public offices he served the public faithfully and efficiently and by his uprightness commanded the confidence and respect of fellow citizens. He was a good organizer. Active and aggressive for everything to benefit the place where he lived, he has left monuments to his memory in many industrial establishments; he helped to promote and locate. In 1920 he went to Garfield, Washington, where he ran a large hotel for several years. From Garfield he went to Monterey Park, California, later he purchased a home in Temple City, California. He was hydraulic engineer for the Graham Rock Co. for several years in that locality. He had a stroke January 25, 1935 and never entirely recovered and April 18 he was taken worse and passed away May 18. During his illness he showed the same uncomplaining spirit of courage, patience and fortitude that characterized his life. He realized the end was near and requested his body be brought to the home of his childhood and to the church he joined when young. Services were held at the M.E. Church Sunday at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Heberlein officiating, and interment was in the Moundville Cemetery. He was a loving husband, a kind and thoughtful father, truest and most faithful friend. He so lived that the common level of humanity was lifted by his having lived. Besides his sorrowing wife and children he leaves two grandchildren, three brothers, and three sisters and a host of relatives and friends. The Golden Gates were opened wide; a gentle voice said Come; and angels from the heavenly side welcomed our loved one home."
