Kenneth Joseph Bruya, 45, of Tumwater, died of pneumonia in his sleep Sunday, June 11, in his home.

He was born Feb. 27, 1950. He grew up in Spokane. He graduated with honors from Gonzaga Prepatory School. He was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity at the University of Washington, where he earned his master's degree in fisheries.

Mr. Bruya was a biologist for the Department of Fish and Wildlife. He was a member of the Olympia Chorale and Light Opera for many years and the president for the past three years. The chorale dedicated a recent performance to him. He was active in the wood-cutting program for the elderly in Thurston County. He received a Governor's Award for outstanding volunteer service.

Mr: Bruya is survived by his partner, Ross Gonedridge, Olympia; mother, Jane Daly, Newport; a brother, Timothy, Spokane; a step- brother, David Daly, Boise, Idaho; two stepsisters, Nancy Ryan, Bellevue, and Jeanne Daly, Tacoma; and six nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 17, in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Olympia.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Northwest AIDS Research Grant, Fred Hutchinson Center, 1124 Columbia St., Seattle, Wash. 98104-2092.

Arrangements are by American Memorial Funeral Directors, Olympia.

Ken was born to Edward J Bruya and Jane E Potter. Ken had one brother: Timothy E Bruya.

Ken was a kind and loving person. He was admired and respected by all who knew him. Ken was a dedicated member of Dignity/Seattle, a chapter of DignityUSA, a supportive LGBT Catholic organization.

Ken was a talented and highly respected Fisheries Biologist at the FISHERIES RESEARCH INSTITUTE School of Fisheries, University of Washington Seattle, Washington 98195

Ken's life was tragically cut short by AIDS. Little was known about AIDS at the time. He lived at 711 South 4th Ave, Tumwater, WA 98502 at the time of his death. His name is a part of the Circle of Friends at the National AIDS Memorial Grove in San Francisco.

He will never be forgotten. And to me, Pat McArron, he was a wonderful friend and kindred spirit.
