Brian was born in Pasco, Washington to Robert Edwin and Marietta Frances Davis. He enjoyed watching Creature Feature movies, and his two favorite television shows were "The Twilight Zone" and "Night Gallery". He was a talented skateboarder and could perform elaborate tricks on his Banzai board. He also played the saxophone. His family joined Peoples Temple in the early 1970s, and secretly he felt disdain for the group, wanting to be free to live his own life. He missed his mother, who had left Peoples Temple, but was not allowed to go home to her. Shortly after his arrival in Jonestown, Guyana, he schemed with a fellow teenager to escape and return to the United States. The two were almost successful, but were caught by Jonestown security and returned to be punished. A year later when Congressman Leo Ryan visited, his friend was able to defect with his family and asked Brian to go along, but in the presence of his loyalist father he was forced to shake his head regretfully and say he couldn't leave.
