Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in the 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry as a Private in Company D on August 29, 1861. After serving with his unit through the June 1962 Seven Days Battles, the August 1862 Second Battle of Bull Run, the September 1862 Battle of South Mountain, and the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, he was promoted to Corporal on March 1, 1863. He participated in the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, and the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, and made an early re-enlistment on December 26, 1863. He served throughout the remainder of the war, participating in the May 1864 Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, the October 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek, and the April 1865 final Union assaults on Petersbirg, Virginia. After serving nearly the entire length of the conflict, he was honorably discharged at Trenton, New Jersey on July 18, 1865.
