. LIEUTENANT COLONEL IN THE EYR TERRITORIALS. HE WAS AWARDED THE VOLUNTEER OFFICER'S DECORATION (VD) FOR HIS LONG AND MERITORIOUS SERVICE WITH THE TERRITORIALS. HE DIED AT THE STATION HOTEL, GOOLE, AGED 59. LEFT £248 TO HIS WIDOW KATE ELLEN JOHNSON. THEY HAD SIX CHILDREN. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH HIS PHOTO ON 1ST NOVEMBER 1915. * BURIED AT HULL NORTHERN CEMETERY.

HIS SON, GUNNER, ALBERT KAY JOHNSON, WHO HAD EMIGRATED TO CANADA JOINED the CEF ARTILLERY, AND DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 06/04/1918, AT ETAPLES, AGED 30.


JOHNSON Richard Ethelbert Lieutenant Colonel Volunteer Officers' Decoration - 2nd/4th Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment late of East Riding York, Royal Garrison Artillery also late Lieutenant Colonel in the East Yorkshire Territorials exceeding about 20 years. He was awarded the Volunteer Officer's Decoration (V.D) for his long and meritorious service with the Territorials. Acting as Adjutant Supernumerary Company of the East Yorkshire Regiment stationed at Goole, was suddenly taken ill on Wednesday night in a critical condition Attended by D. Case who came from Hull to Goole to attend to the Colonel. He had resigned before the war broke out, but offered his services. He died at the Station Hotel, Goole, aged 59 years. Died Friday 29th October 1915; A large detachment of the 3rd East Yorkshires and the R.G.A (Territorials) paid a tribute at the funeral; The funeral cortege left the house 49 Albany street Hull for the General Cemtery Spring Bank Hull (Alternative Commemoration reburied Northern Cemetery screen wall Chnaterlands Aveneu Hull; Hull General Cemetery.A Firing Party of the 3rd East Yorkshires with their band walked in front of the Gun Carriage provided by West Riding R.F.A. Sutton Branch and the top of the coffin carried the Union Flag (incorrectly referred to as the "Union Jack)" immediately came a private coach with the widow and two daughter. Then came 250 officers and men of the 3rd East Yorkshire Regiment under the command of Major Lock, and a detachment of the R.G.A. under Captain Fisher.
