Gus was born in 1884 at White Lake in Dakota Territory and died in Winona, MN in 1976. He and wife Emma were staying with daughter Celesta at the time of his death.
As he grew up, Gus moved with his family from Dakota to Le Mars, IA and then to Iona, MN in 1901. There as a young man he began operating a small restaurant.
Gus married Emma Stallman in Iona on November 16, 1909. They operated the restaurant together and later owned a grocery store in Fairmont, MN. The Hoffmans moved to Grantsburg in 1918 where they engaged in farming and where they raised their family.
Gus was an active leader in the community. He served as a Director on the board of the Polk-Burnett Electrical Cooperative for 25 years. He was Secretary of the Grantsburg Creamery for 20 years and served as Clerk of the Township of Grantsburg from 1922 to 1952. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Grantsburg.
