The son of Uzziah and Hannah (West) Conger. He was a student at Lombard Univ., Galesburg, IL, in 1862, when he entered the Union Army in Co. G, 52nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He participated in many of the principal battles of the war, was with Sherman on the march to the sea and at the grand review in Washington on May 24, 1865, where he was mustered out of the service.
He engaged in farming and business enterprises with his brothers, Norman H. and Edward D. Conger, and in 1871 moved to McLennan County, TX with them.
On Feb. 14, 1866, he married Lavantia Wheeler; they were the parents of 4 children.
He participated with his 2 brothers in the purchase of the 28,000 acre Miguel Rabajo Mexican Land Grant in Northern McLennan County in 1873. and was actively engaged in ranching activities the remainder of his life. In 1890 he was appointed Assistant Postmaster at Waco. Conger was a member of Kit Carson Post #70, G.A.R. and the Masonic Lodge.
