Fritz 'Fred' Ernst Rebitzer was born November 9, 1918 in Nuremberg, Germany. Fred arrived in the Port of New York on board the ship 'Statendam' on September 25, 1937. The ship's port of departure was Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Fred was listed on the ship's roster as Fritz E. Rebitzer, age 18, born in Nuremberg, Germany and there was also his sister Lotte Rebitzer, age 23, with him. The brother and sister were being met by their uncle E. H. Morganthau.

Fred married Magda Berkes on November 3, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. During World War II, Magda was forcibly relocated to Auschwitz and Altenburg-Buchenwald Concentration Camps where she worked at forced labor until her liberation by American forces.

Fred and Magda had three children: Sandra, James Bryant and Robert Scott Rebitzer.

Fred died November 27, 2007 in Cook County and Magda followed him in death August 2012. They are laid to rest together in the Jewish Oakridge Cemetery.

"Fred Rebitzer, 89, of Nuremberg, Germany, escaped Hitler and fought during World War II with the U.S. Navy, founder of Cury Manufacturing Company. 'He who is slow to anger has great understanding. One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty.'

"Dearly beloved husband of Magda, née Berkes, for 59 years; loving father of Sandy Rebitzer (special friend, Neil Kleinbort), Jim Rebitzer (Kathleen Engel) and Bob Rebitzer (Mimi Arfin); devoted grandfather of Hannah, Eden, Elana and Maya Rebitzer; fond brother of the late Lotte (Fred) Aufrecht; dear brother-in-law of the late Iren (the late Dr. Alfred) Eckstein; uncle of Michael (Marlene) and the late Ronald Aufrecht (Carlyn Myer), Betsy Eckstein (David Heller), Avra and Dalya Heller. Funeral services Friday, 11:30 a.m. at the Piser Chapel, 9200 N. Skokie Blvd (at Church St.), Skokie. Interment Jewish Oakridge Cemetery, Hillside.
