Grace was the daughter of Charles and Emma Coffman and had two brothers, Robert and Raymond. After graduating from Bloomsburg High School in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, USA, she married Edwern Carlton Shuman and they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he and several of his family members were employed in the automotive industry. For 20 years, she was a bookkeeper for Stamping Products in Detroit and was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star at a chapter in Detroit. She was a member of the Methodist church.

After Ed's death she retired to Florida. Grace and Ed had no children of their own, but she remained close to the Shuman family nieces and nephews throughout the rest of her life. In her old age, she married Albert Fortin, a kind, pleasant man and a widower. Al was French-Canadian. Grace is buried next to her first husband, Ed, in Bloomsburg and Al is buried with his first wife in Canada.
