Gertrude Wilson dies, was 102
Centenarian Gertrude Wilson, of 27 Summit St., died Saturday in Gaymont Nursing Center, where she had been a resident for five days. She was 102 years old.
Born in Willingham, Lincolnshire, England, she came to Norwalk with her parents when she was four years old. She spent most of her life in this area.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Norwalk,.. She started early in life to do practical nursing, and before receiving her formal training, she worked for the late Dr. Ralph Morse, who maintained a few hospital beds at his residence on Linwood Avenue.
Her hospital training was received at St. Anne's Maternity Hospital in Cleveland, where she graduated with a specialty in obstetrical nursing.
When Norwalk Memorial Hospital was built on West Main Street, she was one of the first patients. She was also a nurse there for many years. From 1937 to 1952, she was a nurse at Wadsworth General Hospital in Wadsworth, Ohio. She then returned to Norwalk, and was employed as a private duty nurse until her retirement in 1960.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Frances Clark and Mrs. Lucille Donohoe, both of Norwalk, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. today at the Kubach-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Walter Chisholm, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk.
