Uncle Andy, as the kids called him, was a section foreman for the L&N Railroad in 1940. He was a member of the 'Brotherhood of Railroad Trailmen' who served as pallbearers at his funeral. Andy was nearly blind at the time of his death. He died from Heart disease and pneumonia.

Andy was married two times. He and his first wife, Mary Sue (Susie) Ferrell, had five children. At the time of his death, his wife was Azalene Thurman.
