Colonel Washington was founder and publisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel, the largest African-American owned newspaper west of the Mississippi River. His was formally an advertising salesman for the now defunct-California Eagle newspaper (1879-1964). In 1948, he suffered a stoke and died June 17, 1974 in Los Angeles, California. Colonel was an honorary title. He was nicknamed Wash and wrote a column in the Sentinel, "Wash's Wash."
