Gay Elaine Abajian passed away at her home on Country Club Road in Walla Walla on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, following a long illness, surrounded by family and friends.
The graveside service will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Mountain Humane Society or the charity of your choice through Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W Alder, Walla Walla.
Gay was born Dec. 2, 1949, to Max and Hazel Prest of Walla Walla at St. Mary's Hospital. She attended Walla Walla Schools, graduating from Walla Walla High School in 1968. While in high school Gay was active in Sponsor Corps and was a member of the Walla Walla Wagonettes.
While attending Walla Walla Community College, Gay met Jim Abajian and on July 25, 1970, Gay and Jim were married in Walla Walla. They had one daughter, Heather. They were active in their car business for 30 years, starting with a a small used car lot and eventually a new car dealership, Abajian Motor Sales in Walla Walla. Gay helped run the office for many years until illness forced her retirement.
Clubs and organizations include past president of the Women's Governing Board of Walla Walla Country Club. Gay was a member of the Walla Walla Country Club Women's 18 hole Golf Association. Gay was a past board member of the Blue Mountain Humane Society, which held a special place in her heart. She was a founding member of Forgeron Cellars Winery and was very active in helping with harvest, bottling and other shareholder functions, which she was always a part of. Gay was also active in Hecate Investment Club.
Gay was a horse lady growing up and throughout her life animals played a special part. During her 40 years of marriage she had many dogs and generally it turned out they were her dogs, not Jim's. For many years Gay had Jackson the parrot, a Blue-Fronted Amazon. Jackson was immortalized in a stained glass window that has moved with her from house to house.
Gay co-piloted in their motor coach and generally wintered in the La Quinta, Calif., area for many years. Gay also loved to travel and had visited many foreign countries. She was a very active reader most recently with her Kindle, which during her sickness made reading easy. Gay played golf for many years and was famous for using only a 5 iron and a putter.
Gay is survived by her husband; daughter of Walla Walla; her mother of Walla Walla; sisters and brother-in-law; various nephews and nieces. Gay was preceded in death by her father, Max Prest.
