Jeptha P. Thomas

Jeptha P. Thomas (c. 1831 to August 21, 1890) was the son of Job Thomas and Esther (Land) Thomas. A name for the middle initial ‘P’ is unknown.

The name Jeptha is a Hebrew name meaning, “God opens”. The name has traditionally been given to boys in English speaking families. It is a variant of the name Jephthah, which appears in the Book of Judges of the Bible’s Old Testament.

On the 1850 Census, he was listed as 17 years old, a farmer, born in North Carolina and listed with his parents. On the 1880 Census, he reports himself and his son, Marion, as laborers.

Jeptha first married Polly Ann Hughes on February 17, 1851. A copy of the marriage record was recorded in Union County, Georgia. Polly Ann was also documented with the name Mary. Typically, Polly is a southern nickname for Mary or Martha; ergo, her name could have actually been Mary Ann. Her parents were John Hughes and Rebecca (Carroll) Hughes. Rebecca’s maiden name was disclosed on John and Rebecca’s son’s, Joseph A. Hughes, death record. Polly/Mary Ann was born c. 1828 and died between the 1870 Census and to when Jeptha remarried in 1871. It is presumed that she is buried in Old Union Cemetery. Jeptha and Polly Ann’s children were: Martha L. J., Andrew G., Alfred Howell, and General Marion.

Jeptha married Millie (Walker) Land on July 15, 1871. Millie was the widow of Aaron Land. Millie reports on the 1900 Census that she was born in April, 1830. She died c. after 1900. On the 1850 Census, Millie was recorded living with her mother Rebecca Walker in Rutherford, North Carolina. Jeptha and Millie had one son, George H.

On the 1860, Agriculture, Selected U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules, Jestha Thomas reports the following Year Ending June 1, 1880: 18 acres Improved and 62 acres Unimproved; $212 Cash value of farm; $5 Value of farming implements and machinery; 1 Milch cow; 2 Other cattle; 4 Sheep; 12 Swine; $60 Value of livestock; Produce During the Year - 5 bushels Wheat, 200 bushels of Indian Corn, 8 pounds of Wool; 20 bushels of Sweet potatoes; 25 pounds of Butter; 10 gallons of Molasses; $30 Value of homemade manufactures; $60 Value of Animals slaughtered.

Jeptha, age 33, was listed on the 40th Senatorial District - Towns County, Enrollment of Present Militia Company District No. 918, certified by John C. Jones, Enrolling Officer, Simpson Reid, Aide de camp, as required by the Act of 14th December, 1863, for re-organizing the Militia of the State of Georgia.

On Census Jeptha reports that he did not know how to read or write. On July 18, 1867, he made “his X mark” on the Georgia, Returns of Qualified Voters and Reconstruction Oath Books, 1867-1869 for Towns County.

Jeptha owned land, which the following deeds were recorded in Towns County, Grantor Jeremiah Land, 1867, Book J, Page 487; Grantee Alfred Corn, 1867, Book J, Page 488; and, Grantee Alfred Corn, 1867, Book I, Page 58. (Information provided by Jason Edwards.) He was recorded on several Georgia Property Tax Digests, 1793-1892.

In April, 1861, Jeptha was first recorded in the Old Union Church book on page 73, number 48, J. P. Thomas. On page 76, the following was recorded, “on Friday the 30th (January) opened the door of the church and received Bro. J. P. Thomas by experience . . .” On March 22, 1863, the following was written, “. . . then dispersed to assemble at the water to attend to the ordinance of Baptism of Bro. J. P. Thomas (by A. Corn)”. He was listed on the 1865 church log, page 83, number 10, Jeptha P. Thomas. His father was number 71, Job Thomas.

In the second Old Union Church Book, it records his death. Although his grave is unmarked, from this memorial it is presumed that Jeptha was buried in Old Union Cemetery. "We the committee on deceased members make the following report on the death of Brother Jepthy Thomas. We find that our aged and beloved Jepthy Thomas joined the church by experience, Friday, January 30, 1863 and was baptized by Elder A. Corn. Sabbath, March 22, 1863. But God in his all wise providence and who doth all things for our Good and his glory saw fit to call Brother Thomas from the tears and toils of this life to that home beyond this vale of tears and our beloved Brother departed this life August 21, 1890, which shows Brother Thomas to be a member of this church 26 years. Therefore, be it resolved first that we as a church bow in humble submission to this dispensation of God's providence feeling our loss in his eternal game. Resolved second that the above memorials and resolution be spread on our record book. George W. Johnson, Joseph H. Trulove and W. T. Morgan Committee." Old Union Church Book page 126.
