Ruth was killed about 4 PM on 17 September 1918 by a Pennsylvania passenger train that passed by the Smith farm. Since Ruth was wearing a white dress, the engineer thought she was a piece of paper blowing across the tracks. Ruth's mother, Anna, was pregnant with my mother, Helen, at the time of Ruth's death
