He married Elizabeth Kleinhen September 12, 1858, in Baltimore, Maryland. They had no children. In 1860, he was a saddler living in Baltimore and stood 5' 6" tall.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Baltimore July 6, 1863, as a private with Co. E, 2nd Maryland Cavalry. He was promoted to the rank of saddler July 30, 1863, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1864.

In 1890, he lived in Hopewell Township and later Shrewsbury Borough, York County, and was known as "a man of good moral character and temperate habits."
