Born and raised in Nancy, Kentucky, Sam left home about 1905/06 and went to Illinois to be with his brothers George & Marion and their families. About 1912 all three brothers and their families headed out to Idaho, where they stayed until returning in 1919 to Holabird, Hyde County, South Dakota. Sam & Marion stayed in South Dakota, George moved on to Missouri for a short time, then on to Colorado, where he stayed.

Sam married Dolphy A. Parlin on Jan. 23rd 1924, their first child was born in 1925. The 1930 Census shows them living in Lincoln, Hyde County, with three children.
The 1940 Census has them in Loomis Township, Hyde County with 5 children.

Viola L. Dalton
Ralph W. Dalton
Jay D. Dalton
Jimmy L. Dalton
