Her husband was historically significant (not famous) because on the night of Independence Day 1908, Clergy Ballard, a respected mining engineer was stabbed by a Drunken negro man named Joe James who had broken into his daughter Blanche's bedroom - Clergy died the next day. Joe James was hanged in October 1908 for the crime; and in 1910 three local purveyors of spirits paid Emma $1,000 each, as a result of her successful lawsuit against them.
Emma lived in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, but died Jacksonville, Morgan Co, IL. She was buried in her hometown of Saratoga, Randolph, Indiana [Note: transcriptions of her ILDC, and possibly the Death Certificate itself, report that she was buried in Saratoga, Randolph, Illinois]
