John Buchanan Howell was born September 4, 1857 in the Utah Territory to Rueben Nurce and Martha Maria (Marie) Buchanan Howell. John was married to Christina Anderson and they moved to the upper Big Lost River Valley, where they had a ranch for many years. Three children were born to this union, Charles, Maude, and Lula Mildred. John Buchanan Howell died August 7, 1926 and is buried at the Chilly Cemetery in Custer County Idaho.
