At 8:30 o'clock last evening Mrs. H. C Jewell passed away without a struggle, after having suffered intense pain for several days.

At the time of her demise, she was in her seventy-sixth year, having been born December 23. 1813. at Canaan, Conn. She was the daughter of the late Hon. William P. Russell, of Salisbury, Conn., and the oldest of ten children, all of whom have died, except Mrs. L. E. Warner, of Covington, Kentucky.

Mrs. Jewell was educated at the Hartford female seminary which was conducted at that time by Mrs. Catharine Beecher. On October 1, 1833 she was married to the late Henry Chapin Jewell and in the year 1843 they came west, principally on account oi Mr. Jewell's health, settling in Green Lake county, but in the year 1844 they removed to Oshkosh, where they permanently resided until their death.

Of their seven children Mrs. Edgar P. Sawyer and Mr. Henry A. Jewell alone survive.

On October 1, 1883, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their married life with a golden wedding party This was an occasion of very tender interest to them and their family, as it afforded an opportunity for a reunion of their many friends from abroad and at home.

In the summer of 1884 Mrs. Jewell suffered a shock of paralysis from which she never recovered, and by reason of which she has for the most part been confined to her home.

In the year 1857 she united with the First Congregational church of this city of which she was a most esteemed member and up to the time of her physical disability was a recognized leader in all the enterprises of the church.

By the death of Mrs. Jewell both the family and the community sustain an irreparable loss. Her life has been full of activities in behalf of the needy and suffering, and now she has gone to her rest and reward, her works will still follow her.

The funeral services will be held from the residence, 800 West Algoma, on Wednesday afternoon at 2:80 o'clock, the Rev. E. H. Smith officiating.
