José Ignacio Antonio Machado y Valenzuela was born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, New Spain, where he was baptized in the Presidio Chapel February 21, 1797 (BP Baptism 00157). He was the son of soldado José Manuel Machado y Yáñez and María del Carmen Valenzuela y Ávila. He married María Estéfana Palomares y Saenz at Mission San Gabriel February 7, 1826 (SG Marriage 01759). He died at Rancho la Ballona (now Culver City) and was buried in the old Calvary Cemetery September 10, 1878.
