She was born January 8, 1923, in Oklahoma City, OK, to the late Valentine and Viola B. Wheeler. She was preceded in death by two brothers: J. Chadwick Wheeler of Clarksville, TN; and Patrick D. Wheeler of Mena, AR; a sister, Billie W. Farmer of Mobile, AL; and her brother-in-law, Richard A. Smith of Burke, VA.
She earned her RN diploma at the University of Oklahoma, School of Nursing in Oklahoma City where she was a member of the Delta Alpha Honor Society. Her nursing career spanned virtually the entire field of nursing: public health, hospital duty (all departments from the Operating Room to the "Preemie Nursery," her favorite), doctor's office, private duty and a nursing home (head nurse). She also served her country during the Korean War as a Navy Nurse from 1951 to 1956, attaining the rank of full Lieutenant.
Throughout her life she spent many hours doing volunteer work for various organizations: PTA, School Room Mother, Church Nursery School Director, Cub Scout Den Mother, Red Cross Blood Donor Program, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard and numerous Church activities such as coordinating the Unseen Guest program and the annual Living Nativity production of St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church. She also enjoyed the hobbies of flower gardening, square dancing, oil painting and traveling.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Lewis F. H. Smith of Wilmington, NC; three sons and their families: Douglas L. Smith and his wife Deborah of Temple City, CA; Brian J. Smith of Cedar Park, TX; and Craig M. Smith and his wife Sandra of Ft. Myers, FL; plus their two children, Andrew and Katherine; her brother, Maxwell V. Wheeler of Richmond, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rob Lapp officiating.
There will be a reception following the funeral service.
Interment will be in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
