Like many in the Lloyd Shuman family, Willard had business ties to Detroit, Michigan, and he owned a machine shop on Gratiot Ave, near the city centre. He lived in Detroit for many years before retiring to the Shuman farm in Catawissa (East Bloomsburg), PA, USA.
Willard, his sister Belle, and an elderly friend were driving in Ontario en route to Michigan on a business trip when an automobile accident occurred, claiming the life of the elderly friend, Emma Jane Niblick, and severely injuring Willard. Many members of the family went immediately to Ontario, and Willard died in hospital a few days following the accident, with his family at his side.
