Barbara Ann Akley passed away December 31, 2012 with her family at home in Apex after a courageous yearlong health battle. She was born March 8, 1946 in Freeport, NY to Gerard Akley and Florence White. She grew up in Rockville Centre and graduated from South Side High in 1964 and then went on to graduate magna cum laude from SUNY Oneonta where she was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi sorority and cherished her 'sisters'.

Fall of 1968 she began her thirty year career in education in Half Hollow Hills School District where she taught first and third grade primarily at Otsego Elementary in Dix Hills, NY.

After retiring in 2001, she lived in her dream home in Sanderling in Duck, NC where she appreciated the sunrise and sunsets and often slept with her bedroom door open to hear the waves rock her to sleep. While in Sanderling, she treasured her friends and community, she continued planning field trips for her friends and coordinated several trips abroad. She is proud to say she set foot on five continents.

She is survived by her sister, Geraldine Miller and brother-in-law Eugene Miller of Belle Fouche, SD, her daughter Elizabeth Ozol and her husband Glen of Miller Place, NY and her son Christopher and Emily Baranello of Apex, NC. She was also blessed with 4 grandsons who adored her: Alex, Cameron, Dante and Roman.

Barbara was a blessing to her family and friends; right until she became ill she was a ball of energy, as one of her friends said 'an incredible force'. She was an amazing mother and nana; she was always full of humor and leaves her family with wonderful memories and empty hearts. A special thank you from the family to Denise Lally-Goss; Teri Tasler from Duke and Gloria from Wake County Hospice, your kindness and support was greatly appreciated.

Funeral services and a celebration of her incredible life will take place in Duck, NC on Saturday, January 19, 2013. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM at Southern Shores Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM at Duck United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Tyson officiating.

Donations may be made in her honor to the wild horses that roamed her property. Please write "in memory of Barbara Akley" on the memo line, Corolla Wild Horse Fund, P.O. Box 361,Corolla, NC 27927.
