Fort Myers News-Press, January 16, 2013 - John Daniel Burns, Jr., 87 of Cape Coral, FL passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013 at his home. John is survived by his brother John F. Burns; sister Maureen E. Rice; 5 children, Diane Nigro, Michael Burns, Sandra Burns, Robyn Webb, and Laura Burns; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and his companion Helen Fox. John was born May 1, 1925 in Norwich, CT to his parents John D. Burns, Sr. and Yvonne (Belisle) Burns. He served his country in the US Navy as a Moulder Third Class during WWII on the USS Apollo in the Pacific Theatre. Following his active duty he enlisted into the Naval Reserve from 1946-1954. While in CT, he retired as Captain of the Hartford Fire Dept. in 1975 after 30 years. He then retired as Director of the Veterans Service Office for the town of Wallingford in 1993, after 20 years of service. John served a lifetime of volunteerism with many veterans organizations including the VFW, American Legion, D.A.V., Cape Coral Volunteer Firemen's Association, AM Vets and many more. While in Cape Coral, FL, he served as Volunteer Commander of the American Legion Post 90 from 2002-2007 and 2011. He continued to serve as a volunteer Veterans Service Officer until his passing. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at the Fuller Metz Funeral Home beginning at 7:00 pm with VFW Honors. The family will receive friends from 4 - 7 pm. Burial will take place at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Please visit www.fullermetz.com to leave the family a condolence.
