Melvin "Mel" Redford Addison Hobbs was taken in to live with Joseph P Shellhouse and Mary Shellhouse after the death of her mother Charlotte. She considered Mamie Shellhouse Buchanan (Mrs J.T. Buchanan) as a sister for her entire life. The extended Buchanan family always included "Aunt Mel" and her son John Buchanan Addison in family gatherings.
