Groton Conn. Retired Navy Captain William Rolston Crutcher , 80, who spent summers at Eastern Point for close to 50 years, died Tuesday at Arleigh Burke Pavilion, Mclean Va., from lung cancer. Capt. Crutcher summered at 224 Shore Ave., a house that has been in his wife's family for three generations. Capt. Crutcher, who would have been 81 on Wednesday, celebrated his 80th birthday there. Catherine Michaelis, Capt. Crutchers daughter, said her father loved Eastern Point from the moment he saw it many years ago. He met his wife, the former Mary Bliss, there when she was spending a summer with her family and he was stationed at the Naval Submarine Base. Capt. Crutcher attended Submarine School at the base before World War II. During the war, he was with the Pacific Fleet, first as Executive Officer of the submarine USS O-3, SS 64, and then for USS APOGON SS 308. After completing five war patrols, he was made Commander of the submarine USS CHIVO, SS 341. His service with this sub earned him the Silver Star and three letters of commendation. From 1949-50 he was at the Naval War College in Newport RI. He then served in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington. Other assignments included Executive Officer, Fleet Sonar School, San Diego; Commander Destroyer Division 152; staff of Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey Calif.; Commanding Officer USS BRYCE CANYON, AD 36; Commander Destroyer Squadron 1 and Commander Destroyer Squadron 5. Capt. Crutcher's ships operated in April-May, 1962, with Joint Task Force 8. He was awarded the Gold Star in lieu of a third Commendation Medal for his service during a nuclear test operation. Capt. Crutcher was assistant director of the Undersea Warfare Development Division in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations from 1963 until he retired in 1965. He then joined Todd Shipyards in Brooklyn, NY. He later became president of Yacht Haven Marina of Stamford, and was a private yacht broker and yacht surveyor. He was a permanent resident of Westport for many years before returning to the Washington area. Capt. Crutcher was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Mobile, Ala. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1934. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, and his daughters, Caroline Michaelis, Constance Carpender, Susan Crutcher, Nancy Tunnicliffe and Mary May. Burial will be next Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery.
