Most records call him Mitchell, and he married Mary 'Polly' Morrison, daughter of Thomas and Fannie Morrison. Known children are Nancy, Julia C., Isaac, and Thomas Jefferson, as shown in the 1850 Polk County, Tennessee census.

No one seems to know the names of William Mitchell's parents, but some conjecture that he was Thomas, but have shared no proof. Nor does anyone seem to know what happened to daughter Nancy, but Julia married John Snider and also moved to Texas with the other family members around 1878. Isaac married Mary Emily Matlock, daughter of Mose and Nancy Matlock; and Thomas Jefferson married Mary 'Molly' Fagg, daughter of A. W. and Mary Fagg.
