Born in McCrory, Arkansas. Ombra Beatrice Ivy was the oldest of 11 children born to James Griffin Ivy and Helen Navada Rowe. As a young girl Ombra moved with her family to Logan County Arkansas where her father farmed first near Booneville in the south Logan then near Paris.

In Paris Ombra met and eventually married Buck Avance. Between 1920 and 1940 Ombra gave birth to 12 children 7 boys and 5 girls, all of who lived to maturity and survived her. During WWII when her husband and half of her children left Arkansas to work in war related industry or join the army Ombra stayed home in Paris and raised her 6 youngest. After the war her husband would came home but her children continued to leave at an alarming rate and while several would come back home in the 1960's and 1970's by the late 1950's the youngest had left the nest.

On a Thursday morning in 1962 Ombra got up and fixed breakfast for her husband and feeling a little tired laid down to take a nap. On February 1, 1962 Ombra Beatrice Ivy Avance died quietly in her sleep. She left behind a husband of 42 years 7 sons Robert Lee, James (J.C.), William (jr), Vernon, Ralph, Donald & Tom Buck and 5 daughters. Jewel, Kathryn Jonnie Lou, Sharlene & Mildred(Gale) and numerous grand & great Grandchildren.
