In the 1920s, Rachel returned to Massachusetts and attended the Northampton Commercial College, while boarding with her Aunt Myra Bridgman in Florence. She then moved to Port Chester, New York, where she taught commercial subjects for two years. She started teaching at the Center School in Westhampton around 1935, and she taught there for twenty-seven years, before retiring in June of 1962, at the age of sixty-eight. During these years Rachel attended the University of Massachusetts and Springfield College and earned her teaching certificate.
In the fall of 1943, Rachel and her brother Henry bought the house at 833 Westhampton Road in Northampton, where they lived for thirty-four years. Their elderly father lived with them until his death at age 97 in 1955. In the fall of 1977, Rachel and Henry sold the house on Westhampton Road and moved into the Pheasant Hill Apartments at 80 Barrett Street in Northampton. Rachel lived there until her death at age 90 in 1984.
