In Memory of Thomas Boyes who died Feb. 15th 1825 aged 87 years.

Thomas's birth year is calculated. Since he died in February of 1825 at age 87, it's possible he turned 87 the previous year in which case, he would have been born in 1737. Another interesting fact comes from the "Zion Lutheran Church of Athens - Extracted from J.B. Beers "History of Greene County", published in 1884, by Ann Clapper". In this reference we have a Thomas "Boys", parents of Robert and Lizabeth Boys, who was baptized January 25, 1737 at the age of 4 months old. If it can be proved that this Thomas "Boys" is, in fact, our Thomas "Boyes", then his birth could be dated to September, 1836. It's also interesting to note that the Zion Lutheran Church in Loonenburg (now called Athens) in Greene County, borders Columbia County and Loonenburg is only 32 miles from Hillsdale, Columbia County where Thomas lived and spent most of his life.

What we do know, is that is that Thomas was living in Hillsdale as early as 1775, as records researched by Ms. Louise Rocchio uncovered the following death record: "Town of Great Barrington, 1851 #39 Oct. 15, 1851 Rachel Vosburgh, 76 yrs. 7 mo. Place - Great Barrington, Wife, born Hillsdale, Parents - Thomas and Tryphena Boyse, Cause of death - disease of the brain." Whether all of the children were born in Hillsdale is subject to debate. Evidence points to Isaac being born in Connecticut. In the 1855 New York census, Isaac states that he was born in Connecticut. Also, "Bible Records, Vol. 4 Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society, BE IT KNOWN AND REMEMBERED, Pub. 1966, page 51, states the same. Also, his 2nd wife, Jerusha Reeves, was born in Saybrook, Connecticut.

According to research by the Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the DAR, Thomas served in the American Revolutionary War. It is possible that he received his land as a grant for serving in the 5th Regiment of the Albany County Militia. I did find the following in the Hillsdale Public Library, Hillsdale, New York "Revolutionary War Veterans Buried in Columbia County, New York", Volume II, complied by Ester Griswold French, Hendrick Hudson, Chapter NYSDAR, Inc. Hudson, NY, 1978
