Abram Stanley migrated from New York to Shullsburg, Wisconsin in the 1850s where he became the Postmaster. He was also a trained artist and his works include portrait paintings in the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C..

Portrait of Absalom Austin Townsend of Shullsburg, WI by Abram Stanley. This portrait is in the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives in Madison and was completed shortly after Townsend's election to the General Assembly in 1855.
