David died in the government hospital of dysentery months after the siege of Vicksburg. He was a Sergeant in company F of the Illinois 81st Infantry. However, he was reduced to private because of cowardice in the disastrous charge on Confederate fortifications on May 22, 1863. In that battle his thumb was fractured and later amputated.
