Bud's obituary as it appeared in the Lyon County Reporter in Rock Rapids, Iowa:

Benjamin Alvin "Bud" Colby, Jr. was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa on April 26, 1926. He was the son of Benjamin Alvin Colby, Sr. and Etta Mae (Hughes) Colby. He passed away on January 17, 2013 in Presque Isle, Maine.

He graduated from Wilson High School in Rock Rapids with the Class of 1944. At 17 years of age, he enlisted in the V5 Naval Air Corps program and attended the University of Dubuque until VE Day. At that point, he transferred to the V12 program and was sent to Northwestern University in Chicago, where he took business administration and Navy ROTC classes. He graduated with a degree in Commerce from Northwestern University, and returned to Rock Rapids, where he briefly taught seventh and eighth grade mathematics.

On March 26, 1948, Bud married Lucy Joan Smith of Rock Rapids. In March of 1950 a daughter, Paula Jane, was added to their family. He joined his father at the Colby Cement Company for a short time before he joined his father-in-law at the Reporter as business manager.

He and Lucy and Lucy's Father, Paul C. Smith, owned and operated the newspaper until 1989. One of the highlights of his long newspaper career occurred in 1988, when their peers in the Iowa Newspaper Association chose Bud and Lucy as Iowa Master Editors.

Over the years, Bud and Lucy enjoyed traveling together to press meetings. After retirement they continued to travel together including several trips with their daughter and her husband. Bud was a lifelong student of history, and all of their trips included frequent and lengthy visits to museums of all kinds. Bud also enjoyed family history and passed that love and knowledge on to both his daughter and granddaughters.

One of the joys of his life was maintaining contact with his classmates from the Class of 1944. In the last few years of his life, this contact consisted primarily of letters and phone calls. He disdained email, and he refused to give in to computer technology. However he was perfectly content to receive information that was emailed to his daughter and then passed along to him in "hard copy."

He was a lifelong member of the Rock Rapids United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. As an avid target-shooting marksman, he was also a Lifetime Member of the National Rifle Association. He was a Fifty Year Member of the Masonic Order, a member of the Knights Templar, a Shriner, and a longtime member of Kiwanis Club.

For the past nine years Bud's constant companion has been his Maine Coon cat, Lydia, who misses him terribly.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, two granddaughters, and five great grandchildren who loved their Bop Bop!
