Velma B. Johnson
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Velma Bergdoll Johnson, 88, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at Williamsport Nursing Home.
Born March 14, 1910, in Petersburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late J. Ed and Rhoda Sites Bergdoll.
She was preceded in death by her husband, K. Brent Johnson, in 1995. They were married Feb. 3, 1940.
She received her bachelor of science degree from West Virginia University in 1935. She also attended Arizona State University and Colorado State University.
She retired Jan. 1, 1971, after 35 years as West Virginia extension agent for Berkeley County.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Martinsburg and was a former teacher of Fidelis Sunday School Class of the church.
She was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron and Epsilon Sigma Phi honorary societies; and American Home Economics Association and National Association of Home Extension Economists, from which she received the Distinguished Service Award in 1947. She served on the executive board of the national association for eight years, two years as president.
She was a member of American Association of University Women and past president of the Martinsburg branch.
She is listed in Who's Who of American Women. In 1962 she broadcast five-minute spots over radio stations WEPM in Martinsburg and WCST in Berkeley Springs. She worked with home demonstration clubs in Morgan County and taught school in Grant County.
She is survived by a sister, Wilda Loftin of Piedmont, Ala.; and two brothers, Merlin Bergdoll of Madison, W.Va. and David Bergdoll of Petersburg, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mila Yutzy.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Curt Lowry will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery
