Pittsford: Suddenly, January 13, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Melanie Bloch of Seattle, WA, Philip (Denise) Bloch of Los Angeles, CA, Christine (Edward) Robison of Cazenovia, Doug (Amy) Hannie of Rochester, Karen (Nicole Kusczak) Hannie of Maui, HI; grandchildren, Zachary Self, Mary and Christopher Robison, Jaxson and Maddox Hannie; sister-in-law, Lynee Bloch; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dr. Bloch was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and moved to Brighton, New York, where he attended Brighton High School. He graduated from the University of Rochester, then studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam (Holland). After his surgical training at Strong Memorial Hospital, he was invited into the practice of Edward Douglas, M.D.; that practice endures as Genesee Surgical Associates. Dr. Bloch practiced general surgery at The Genesee Hospital for many years, in partnership with Robert Wolf, M.D. later including Christopher Caldwell, M.D., and Robert Tripp, M.D. He was honored for excellence in teaching and patient care with the David Jewett, M.D., Award. After "retirement," he served as Medical Director of Lakeside Memorial Hospital, in Brockport, and then was a Medical Director for Preferred Care. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Rochester Academy of Medicine, and was honored with its Distinguished Service Award, in 2004.
For the past seven years, Len volunteered on a daily basis at Dudley Elementary School, in Fairport, helping second-grade children, whom he adored. Len was named Volunteer of the Year twice for his dedication and commitment to Dudley and his students. He enjoyed a lifelong passion for tennis, and was a charter member of the Midtown Athletic Club, where he exercised daily; he was also a Lifetime Member of the Tennis Club of Rochester. Len had a deep appreciation of music, and was supportive of the Hochstein School, the Eastman School of Music, and the RPO. Donations in his memory will be gratefully accepted by the William Warfield Scholarship Fund, at Eastman, the Hochstein Scholarship Fund, and the Leonard Bloch Memorial Fund, (c/o Norman Beck, Dudley Elementary School, 211 Hamilton Road, Fairport.)
