Autra Murphy Smothers was born on January 28, 1923, the son of Tom Smothers and Vannie ( -- ) Smothers.

He was married 1st to Sadie -- , and he was later married again. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, having enlisted on January 26, 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and at that time he was 73 inches tall and weighed 157 pounds.

Autra was also a member of UAW Local 737 and retired from Ford Glass Plant. He was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church.

He was 89 years old and a resident of Nashville, Tennessee when he passed away on January 22, 2013, 6 days before his 90th birthday.

Preceded in death by his parents, his 1st wife, son Tom Smothers and his sister Buron (Smothers) Allen, while survivors include his wife; a married son; grandson; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law; two sons-in-law; and a married sister.

Burial was in Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
