US Congressman. Born near Moorefield, West Virginia, he attended local schools, became a teacher, taught school in Circleville, Ohio and then engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was appointed deputy sheriff in 1833, elected sheriff in 1834, served until 1837 and was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1839-41). In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed agricultural pursuits, was a member of the Ohio State Senate, (1858-63) and served in the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1865-67). He died at the age of 75 on his farm in Circleville, Ohio.
