Second child and only son to Martin and Eva O'Beck, Adrian was 6 years younger than his sister. The O'Beck family was well established in the Grand Haven area by the time Adrian was born, and prospered in the fishing industry on the Great Lakes.

In 1937, when he was 19, he joined the US Coast Guard. There he served until 1946. During his enlistment he married Barbara Jean Fochtman, who was from a prominent family in nearby Petoskey, in 1942. By 1947, they had moved to Southern California where they began to raise a family. A total of seven children were born to them, two girls and five boys.

Adrian was a loving father, husband and grandfather. His grandson remembers him sitting in his chair in the den watching his tv, chatting with the multiple visitors who would stop by the house every day, and reading the dictionary every day and putting to use the new word he had learned.
