Funeral services for John Lee Brooker, 59, employee of Colonial Stores, will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon from Dunbar Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. B. C. Franklin, pastor of Blaney Baptist Church, the Rev. W. T. Chewning, pastor of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, the Rev. Carl A. Honeycutt, pastor of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, and the Rev. J. C. Chapman, pastor of Swansea Baptist Church. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mr. Brooker of 2116 Lincoln St., died at 3:30 yesterday afternoon at the Veterans Hospital after several months of declining health. He had been seriously ill since being injured in an automobile accident about two weeks ago. Mr. Brooker was born in Swansea September 5, 1895, a son of the late John Lee Brooker, Sr., and Minnie Whetstone Brooker. He had made his home in Columbia for the past four years. He attended Crescent Hill Baptist Church and was a veteran of World Wars I and II.
Survivors include his widow, Myrtle Porter Brooker of Columbia; his stepmother, Mrs. J. Lee Brooker, Sr., of Swansea; one sister, Mrs. J. B. DeShields of Langford; three half-sisters, Miss Lurna Brooker and Miss Verna Brooker, both of Swansea, and Mrs. George DesChamps of Mayesville; and one half-brother, Joe Booker of Blaney.
Active pallbearers will be Billy DeShields, Edward Boozer, Furman Porter, Roger Porter, Bobby Jacobs and Sammy Derek.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. W. O. Tanner, Dr. Theodore J. Hopkins, Dr. W. W. Ledyard, L. D. Dabbs, Dr. Arthur Peake, Arnold Porter, Asbury Martin, B. T. Harrison, Herbert Porter, Brooks Smith, D. G. McLeod, William F. Tapp, James L. Tapp, E. W. Jacobs, and Frank Roberts.
