Died- At his home near the village of Shullsburg, on Monday, April 12, 1886, John Morgan, in the seventy eighth year of his age. The death of John Morgan removes one more of the old land marks that point to the early settlement of this part of Lafayette County. For nearly forty years he has been a resident of this town and has seen the few huts that formerly marked the site of Shullsburg pass away and give place to the spirit of improvement, until in their places stands our present prosperous village.
He has seen the uninhabited prairies converted into fertile fields and the sparsely settled neighborhood in which he selected his home become a thickly settled community. One by one the comrades of his early days have passed silently away and now he has joined them.
He was born in Londonderry, Ireland, and came to Harpers Ferry, Va., in 1832. He came to Shullsburg in 1847 and has ever since occupied the farm where he died. He was a brother of Shane Morgan of this village and of Michael Morgan of Seymour. He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Jos. Sullivan, Mrs. Jos. McCarville an d Mrs. Donavin and also two grandchildren, children of his deceased son Edward Morgan.
He had been sick since last summer from a tumor in the stomach. His funeral took place yesterday from St. Matthew's church in this village, the funeral procession being one of the largest ever seen here. A number of friends and relatives were present from Darlington and other towns.
